Introduction to Humanitarianism
Date: 20 Mar 2017
Length: 1 days
Location: Yangon, Myanmar
Residential: No
About the course:
This one-day introduction to Humanitarianism provides an overview of the humanitarian sector and introduces participants to key issues in relief work. The course begins by outlining the global context in which humanitarians work and explores the founding principles of humanitarian action: impartiality, neutrality, independence, and humanity. Building on this, the course then explores the differences between humanitarianism and development, and the historical and political roots of relief work.
An introduction to international law, including refugee law, is followed by an overview of the major actors in the international relief system, including the United Nations, and governmental and non-governmental organisations. The course concludes with an overview of quality and accountability mechanisms in the sector that challenges participants to consider specific needs of beneficiaries in different contexts. This short course provides an overview of the humanitarian sector that would be beneficial for both participants who are new to relief work and those who have experience in the sector but are looking to expand their understanding of the underlying principles of humanitarian work.
